LAREDO, TEXAS – Border Patrol agents assigned to the Laredo Sector Border Patrol Checkpoint located on Interstate Highway 35 seized marijuana during a foiled narcotics smuggling attempt.
The incident occurred on December 15, when agents conducting an inspection on a silver Dodge Charger, referred the vehicle to secondary inspection due to a service canine alert.
Upon further inspection, the agents discovered 40 bundles of marijuana wrapped in clear cellophane with brown tape. The bundles were discovered in the spare tire area inside the trunk of the vehicle. The driver and passenger, both United States citizens, were placed under arrest and escorted to the checkpoint for processing.
The marijuana had an approximate weight of 24.8 kgs/54.56 lbs and had an estimated value of $43,648. The case was referred to the Drug Enforcement Administration. The vehicle utilized in the smuggling attempt was seized by the United States Border Patrol.
