LAREDO, Texas—The City of Laredo Health Department is issuing a travel advisory for all residents as our current number of COVID-19 cases are rising quickly across the nation. Over 100,000 new cases across the United States have been reported consecutively in the last 7 days, more than the recorded new cases during the summer. Texas is quickly approaching 10,000 new cases per day.
It is our responsibility to take this situation seriously and prevent new COVID-19 infections, especially during the week of Thanksgiving.
“Less is more this COVID Thanksgiving” is the motto our health representatives are recommending: Less interaction; Less guests (if not any) at your home; Less risk for you, your family, friends and community to contract and transmit COVID-19.
The advice is to not travel during this high level of COVID-19 infections or gather for Thanksgiving. As unfortunate and inconvenient it is to not be with our loved ones over the holiday season, the priority should be to not let COVID-19 fatigue set in and not let it harm any of the people close to you. The purpose is to prevent for this Thanksgiving to be a super spreader event. We have seen cases skyrocket after the 4th of July celebration and now we are seeing the same effects after Halloween.
Even though it is Laredo Health’s recommendation to not gather, if you are still considering having guests during Thanksgiving, you should:
- Get tested – know your COVID Status
- Host an outdoor meal
- Wear masks indoors and outdoors
- Avoid direct contact such as hugging, kissing, and shaking hands
- Avoid potluck style serving – have one person serve all the food
This holiday season adhere to COVID-19 safety recommendations. Be safe and be thankful.
