LAREDO, Texas—Today, in light of the situations posed by COVID-19 in Texas and across the United States, both Mayor Pete Saenz and Webb County Judge Tano Tijerina issued emergency declarations for the City of Laredo and the County of Webb, respectively. Pursuant to §418.108(a) of the Texas Government Code A, a mayor or county judge can declare a local state of disaster and public health emergency.
These declarations put into action the city’s emergency management plan and opens the possibility of reimbursement by the federal and state governments.
“The city is taking steps to ensure the safety and well-being of our citizens,” said Mayor Pete Saenz. “We are acting swiftly and aggressively to contain this pandemic. I thank Judge Tijerina for his commitment to this cause. I want the public to know that we are united in this front and we continue to ask the public to be mindful of official notifications from the City of Laredo.”
“This declaration is necessary to activate our response system, it is not cause for panic,” said Webb County Judge Tano Tijerina. “We are all in this together. I ask that we look out for each other and follow the guidelines set forth by the CDC and our local health department.”
